Invincible Eagles kicks off season with 5-star performance

The defending champions, Invincible Eagles, kicked off their first game of the season on Saturday with a 5-goal performance against LWC FC. The home team, (LWC) were hoping to continue their current form, after winning their first game of the season against DC Eagles on 29th February. However, they never quite settled into the game during the first half as Invincible Eagles continuously piled on the pressure with wave after wave of attacks from their attacking trident of Cyrus Harmon, Kossi Edem Abotsi and Tawab Emiola. This resulted in 3 goals in the first half, with goals scored by one of the trio (and new signing) – Kossi Edem Abotsi in the 15th minute, Cyrus Harmon in the 21st minute from a deflected free kick, and Christopher Ojo who dispatched a cut-back pass from the wing. LWC FC’s goalkeeper, Yomi Olutayo, was kept busy throughout the period and the only positive take-away from his first half heroic performance was to keep the scoreline at 3 goals.

Invincible Eagles on the other hand appeared unstoppable. The attacking trio continued to wreak havoc on LWC FC’s defense, and with the midfielders joining the fray, the game was almost over by end of first half. The scoreline would have been four goals when Nobert Njei rifled a shot from outside the box through the defense line and struck the far corner of the goal post.

The second half was a slightly different story though. LWC FC managed to settle in and had better composure on the ball. This was largely influenced by key changes made by the coach, Olaleye Olaosebikan, and introduction of one of their key players (Frank Nwaya Tochukwu). Frank’s presence was instantly felt, as he was on target 2 minutes into the second half. This goal was effectively nullified when Kossi Edem Abotsi struck again in the 62nd minute. LWC FC didn’t go down without a fight and their continued pressure on Invincible Eagles defence resulted in a well placed goal by Onome Opia in the 73rd minute. The game was effectively sealed when Cyrus Harmon broke away from the LWC’s defence line with a perfectly weighted through-pass and coolly dispatched the ball in the 85th minute to seal the game.

Overall, all the fans and observers were treated to a highly entertaining game – and Invincible Eagles have re-asserted themselves as a strong contender to be in the finals.
